Much of my work concerns itself with uncovering and then bringing to light objects, forms and ideas that have been quieted. Samuel Beckett said, “I make a play to find out what it is about.” I have followed in his footsteps, and I have responded to this hillside in the same manner. Thoughts and feelings of slavery, field workers, searing heat and back pain, tending, nurturing, discouragement, disappointment, and handiwork passed through me as I worked hour after hour, day after day. And towards the end, the biggest feeling was a complete surprise.
